Your questions answered
Common Questions
What’s the difference between a fiancé visa and marriage-based Green Card?
A K-1 fiancé visa is for foreign nationals engaged to U.S. citizens, allowing them to enter the U.S. and marry within 90 days. A marriage-based Green Card applies after the marriage, either through adjustment of status or consular processing.
Can I apply for a Green Card for my parents or siblings?
U.S. citizens aged 21 or older can sponsor their parents. Siblings fall under the family preference category, which has a longer wait time. Permanent residents cannot sponsor parents or siblings.
How long does it take to become a U.S. citizen after getting a Green Card?
Most applicants are eligible to apply for naturalization after 5 years of permanent residency, or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen.
Do I need to speak English to become a U.S. citizen?
In most cases, yes. However, some older applicants may qualify for exemptions based on age and how long they’ve held a Green Card.
